First Thoughts on Dubai

Dubai Skyline from my hotel room

Dubai Skyline from my hotel room

Other than higher than normal amounts of turbulence, my flight from Bangkok was pretty uneventful. I few on Etihad Airlines, the official airlines of the UAE. I had never heard of it before until I booked the flight. It was good flight. The flight attendants had a very unique uniform which is probably the most elegant I’ve ever seen on flight attendants. It was a light white scarf which had half of it tucked under their 60’s pillbox like hat.

I flew into Abu Dhabi not Dubai, so I had to take a bus between the cities. The road between Abu Dhabi was the best road I’ve been on since my trip started. 10 lanes, good condition, and new construction everywhere along the road. New construction is a theme which will pop up again.

Here are my first impressions of Dubai and the UAE:

  • The city it reminds me most of is Las Vegas. A brand new city in the desert. Not as glitzy as Vegas, however. More like a cross between Vegas and an office park on the edge of town.
  • Everything here is under construction. The city has a very unfinished feel to it. Even buildings not under construction will have sand where there you think there ought to be landscaping.
  • The buildings here are not just buildings. Every high rise building seems to have some flair to it that would make it the architectural high point in a smaller city.
  • Outside of immigration and customs officials at the airport, every person I’ve had contact with has been either Indian or Filipino. I walked down the street and I would have thought I was in India. Saw a game a sandlot cricket, which I don’t think is really a popular Arab sport.
  • There is a giant firewall that filters all the internet traffic in the UAE. Flickr is blocked from Dubai. I tried to use Hotspot Shield as a VPN to stream video from Hulu.com, and it was blocked.
  • I get two contradictory impressions of Dubai: 1) This is a giant construction bubble which will all collapse because so much money is being spent on useless projects. 2) Dubai is wisely investing in non-oil related industries and positioning itself for a day when they will not have to rely on oil, and making itself the leading economic center of the Middle East. I think both of them may be true.
  • I have read that 25% of all the construction cranes in the world are in Dubai. I don’t know if that’s true, but there are a lot of them. Throw in Abu Dhabi, and I might believe it. Looking out the window where I’m writing this I counted 25 cranes. Construction has to be the biggest industry in the UAE.

I’m sure I’ll have more to say in the upcoming days as I explore the area more. So put it mildly, there is probably no place quite like Dubai on Earth.

Travel and Blogging Plans for 2009…..and my 1,000th Subscriber

Travel

2008 has been a helluva year for me. I’ve swam with whale sharks, had monkeys sit on my head, been around armed soldiers in a hot zone, was in the area of a presidential assassination attempt, drove close to 10,000km, explored caves, been to the top of mountains, slept in open deserts and walked in the tops of the rainforest.

In a few days I’ll be flying to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates and starting a whole new leg of my journey. For the last year I’ve been in SE Asia and Australia. After a while I’ve enjoyed almost every minute of it, I’m looking forward to visiting a new part of the world where the rules are totally different. Different language, different religion, different climate, and different time zone. I’ve basically been within an hour or two of the same time zone for the past year so I haven’t had major issues of adjustment to deal with.

I’m excited to go to Dubai because, along with perhaps Shanghai, Dubai is one of the “happening” places on Earth right now. Lots of construction, the tallest building in the world, and lots of ridiculous things like a refrigerated beach and indoor ski slope. I can’t wait to see it.

The current plan is to go to Egypt and parts of Jordan. Hopefully this fighting in Gaza doesn’t get any worse. I’ll have to keep an eye on it. I have pretty good instincts about that sort of stuff.

From there I’ll be going to Rome and working my way to either Amsterdam or London before coming back to North America for a few months. Sometime in mid/late 2009 I’ll be heading off on a tour of Latin America. During my time in the US I plan on doing some driving/camping around the country. I have no idea where I will go yet. The Grand Canyon is on the list if for no other reason than I have never been there.

Blogging

Today also marks a milestone for my website. If you look at the little counter up in the top right of the site, you will see that I’ve passed the 1,000 RSS Subscriber mark. There are very few travel blogs with that many subscribers, very few which are run by individuals, and no travelogues that I know of. (The number goes up and down every day, so I’m sure it will dip below 1,000 during the next week or two)

When I started my trip, the only people who really followed my blog were friends and family. In late 2007 I made a decision to see if I could make something out of what I was doing. I know a lot of people dream of traveling like I do and would love to make a career out of it. I figured I was already traveling and I have the internet expertise, so I should take a shot at it and see what I could do. The above graph are my results to date.

My background is in the technical side of things. During the last year I’ve had a real education learning about online marketing and promotions. Even though I’ve been traveling, I’ve treated the website and my photography like a job. I don’t really make any money off of the site at this point. I’ve probably made about $100 total from Google by running their ads, not quite enough to cover the costs of hosting. Making money right now really isn’t my goal, however. What I’d like to do is to reach out to as many people as possible, because that is what I really enjoy doing.

I’ve gotten emails and tweets from people telling me how inspiring I am and how I have helped them make the decision to travel. I have a lot of things planned for 2009. I hope I can get to all of them, but there is only so much you can do as a one man operation living out of a bag. I’ve learned that lesson the hard way. Here are some of the things I’m going to be doing in 2009:

  • Write a book. This is the number one priority for me this year. Given my unique lifestyle, I’m in a position to work my ass off like no one else to promote it. (If you are in the publishing biz, or know someone who is, drop me a line.) I don’t hope to just write a book as a one shot deal either. If it goes well, I’d like to an annual, or biannual event.
  • Sell photographs I’ve taken close to 40,000 photos on my trip. There are around 4,000 which are good enough to put online. • Professional Site Redesign I am in the middle of having this done right now. • Podcasting This has been a constant struggle with me. Trying to do travel video by yourself while taking a lot of still photos at the same time is difficult, and impossible if you want to do it well. On my Latin America trip, my plan is to travel with someone who can produce the podcast (camera work and video editing). I have no idea who this will be at this point, I only know I can’t do it alone. I think a podcast which is live from the road would be really unique and has the potential to be very successful. Thailand Expats

I had Christmas dinner with a group of American/Canadian expats who live in Bangkok. I was invited by Art who runs CrazyDogTravel.com and other websites. Most of the guys were involved in internet/web design so it was nice to be able to talk shop with some similar minded people; something I almost never get to do on the road. It was a buffet in an Indian restaurant which wasn’t bad. It was more than what you would pay for most meals in Bangkok, but it was Christmas so there isn’t really anything to complain about. I got my moneys worth and filled myself with seafood.

It was interesting to be in such a large group of expats, many of which have been in Thailand for over a decade. Most of them have Thai wives or girlfriends and seem to have every intention of staying in Thailand forever.

I’ve probably met more expats in Thailand than anywhere else I’ve been on my trip. I was told by one American guy I met in Vietnam that Pattaya alone is the largest expat community in the world with over 100,000 westerners living there. As he described it, it is one of the only places outside of the western world where you can live without making any of the compromises you have to make in other places. There are tons of golf courses, big box stores, western supermarkets, lots of restaurants and a very low cost of living.

What I found fascinating about the guys I met on Christmas was that they were basically doing the same work they would otherwise have done back in the US. So long as you have an internet connection, you really do have the freedom to live anywhere in the world your want.

One thing I’ve noticed with many of the expats I’ve met in SE Asia (everywhere but Australia actually) is that they are almost always men. The women I meet are usually married to western men, but many of the men are married to local women. I’m curious to see if I see the opposite trend in other parts of the world: expat women marrying local men. If what you see on movies and television is true, you should expect to see more expat women in places like Italy and France.

The idea of moving away from the US is something which is very strange to people who haven’t done much international traveling. The more of the world I see, the more I can understand why people do it. Thailand is a very comfortable place to live and it is also very affordable. There are downsides, but there are plenty of upsides to living abroad. If they had a better connection to the internet, I could see living somewhere like Samoa or Micronesia.

If you are an expat who lives in any country away from your homeland, please leave a comment giving your experiences. I’d especially love to hear how expat experiences might differ between men and women.
